Past event: Interoperable Open Architecture 2011 Conference

Promoting Standardised Open Architecture Criteria To Facilitate Greater Flexibility, Capability and Interoperability

Over the last few years there has been a subtle but important shift in the way defence procurement is taking place. In an effort to reduce through-life maintenance and modification costs, more and more nations are looking to specify the architecture used across a multitude of platforms. By specifying an architecture based on open standards and a data-centric method of communication, interoperability across a range systems, sub-systems and system-of-systems becomes more straight forward, whilst simultaneously promoting genuine competition for upgrade and maintenance contracts.

Defence IQ is delighted to announce its inaugural Interoperable Open Architecture conference. IOA 2011 is the only event where delegates can assess developments across a broad range of "next-generation” open architecture systems to provide up to the minute information in this cutting edge field.

Attend Interoperable Open Architecture to hear

  • Insights into the requirements and rationale behind leading IOA programmes from UK MoD DE&S, US ACT DoD and the European Defence Agency, and how the methods used in these programmes could improve your own procurement processes
  • Discussion surrounding ongoing international efforts to create open architecture standards by NATO, the Object Management Group, the Open Group, and the Technical Cooperation Panel, and how such standardisation can reduce the cost and risk associated with non-COTS architecture solutions.
  • Assessments of how future open architecture projects will be implemented, with presentations on the US Victory Architecture, the Royal Navy's type 26 Frigates, and the French Integrated Modular Vetronics Project.

Conference Overview

DefenceIQ is proud to announce the agenda for our inaugural Interoperable Open Architecture conference. The event was born out of the interesting shift in procurement strategy we are starting to see in the UK and the US, whereby procurement offices are beginning to specify the nature of the architecture used by primary contractors.

This, combined with the publishing of systems data dictionary to dictate system interactions, represents a clear desire to take greater control over future platforms and promote competition between industry solution providers.

What is your firm doing to capitalize on this fundamental shift in procurement strategy we are starting to witness?

Our expert speaker panel will be discussing both the benefits and limitations of IOA, and how their organisations are looking to partner with industry to develop the next generational of defence platforms. The event is also free to attend for all serving military and government officials, providing diverse input during the conference as well as excellent networking opportunities. Senior speakers at IOA 2011 include:

  • Major General Nikolas Justice, Director, Research Development and Engineering Command, US Army
  • Merfyn Lloyd OBE, Science Advisor Chief of Materiel (Land), DE&S, UK MoD
  • Ian Burch, Generic Vehicle Architecture Project Office Lead, DE&S, UK MoD
  • Robert Chesney, Advanced Vetronics Demonstrator and Technical Cooperation Panel, Canadian DND
  • David Camm, Department Head, Systems Engineering and Integration Group, DE&S, UK MoD
  • Benjamin Hermant, TACTIC Demonstrations Leader, DGA

These individuals will be talking about the issues that directly relate to the future design of unified architecture systems, including the VICTORY architecture, the Generic Vehicle Architecture, architectural plans for the Royal Navy’s Type 26 Frigates, and the range of international efforts to standardise architecture design to improve interoperability between allied nations. The event will give you with the opportunity to hear directly from senior procurement officials and requirement setters, whilst also providing your own input as to the future of architecture design.
