Site Visit

Exclusive Site EDF's Gavet hydro schemes - Tuesday 13th September 2016

During the afternoon of 13th September 2016 a limited number of conference attendees will receive a unique opportunity to visit EDF's Gavet hydro schemes at Romanche river .

There is no extra charge to attend the site visit, but spaces are limited and allocated on a first come first served basis. Please register your attendance for the site visit when booking for the conference.

The mid-section of the Romanche river is presently equipped with 6 plants (82 MW, 320 GWh/y), that are at the end of their lifetime. EDF has therefore decided to fully redesign the river equipment, by substituting a unique plant to the six existing ones. Such a choice enables to maximize the output (about 40% higher) and drastically reduce the O&M cost, leading to a much better economy than the refurbishment option. However, such a choice also allows answering current concerns of our society in key areas: environment, public safety and integration in the territory. With respect to the environment, the new scheme will enable to answer the Water Framework Directive's expectations on ecological continuity, by removing most of existing weirs and equipping the new dam with a fish pass as well as of a downstream migration device. From a safety perspective, energy dissipaters will be installed at the powerhouse, allowing again the practice of whitewater activities, with their associated economical benefits for the local community. In the field of territorial integration, dismantling the existing plants is the real stake. Besides in-depth studies to anticipate and master the effects of the weirs' removal, EDF held a thorough dialogue to bring to the foreground a project for the territory, so as to define the future of the existing sites. Largest ongoing French hydropower project, Romanche Gavet illustrates the present vision of a hydropower scheme: efficient, environment friendly and respectful of public safety, realized in dialogue with and to the benefit of all stakeholders.
