Our DoD Unmanned Systems Summit is designed as an educational and training "Town Hall" forum, where thought leaders and key policy-makers across military and civilian organizations can come together for actionable discussions and debate. The Summit will offer a full spectrum viewpoint towards air/land/sea systems.

*The phrase "unmanned systems" is used to collectively refer to all robotic systems that may be remotely piloted or contain a level of autonomous tasking, and operate on land, sea, air and space domains

2016 SUBJECT AREAS TO INCLUDE:

Our DoD Unmanned Systems Summit allows for  military users, civilian, and academia across the unmanned systems spectrum to come together to learn, discuss, debate, and help advance  several key areas within the  community such as:
  1. Fusion warfare, the combat cloud, and future implications for the unmanned ISR community
  2. Autonomy research and activity and human- machine teaming
  3. Improving communication systems within and amongst land, sea, air and space systems
  4. Opportunities to improve commonalities and interoperability, including integrating and standardizing open architectures
  5. Tailoring existing policies and requirements to support processes for unmanned systems
  6. Improving onboard data processing for ISR
  7. Activities with MUM-T
  8. Improving power, endurance and efficiency
  9. Cyber and EW considerations
  10. Latest FAA discussions regarding UAS in US airspace  and creating a UTM


Background:

As unmanned / RPA systems  are looked upon for expanding  capabilities and maximizing mission performance  for the future fight for our Military Services across land, sea, air, and space, military leaders, the S&T and private sector communities are tasked with rapidly solving many of the current, and foreseeable future challenges. From policy and procedure to requirements and technical capabilities, expanding capabilities is not just about solving the near term challenges, but thinking beyond the abilities of today, to where and how these systems can be used tomorrow.

The DON recently announced it will field and sustain diverse unmanned/autonomous forces capable of independent and integrated missions in all physical and operational environments, including cyberspace and the electromagnetic spectrum. Unmanned vehicles and systems have the potential to transform the naval forces by expanding existing capabilities and enabling new ones. These new capabilities must drive new operational concepts and create real advantages over adversaries. Memorandum, SECNAV "Treat Unmanned as Unmanned", Nov. 13, 2015.

The Army is working towards creating a unified vision for robotics and autonomous systems - from doctrine to capabilities to increase overmatch capabilities that align with their current AOC "Win in a complex World".

The Air Force , while faced with the current challenge of training and maintaining pilots to meet the current demand for RPA missions, is looking at the maturity and potential benefits of autonomous platform behaviors. This effort would push autonomous technology development for a Loyal Wingman concept to an integrated set of demonstrations.

"The DoD's vision for unmanned systems is the seamless integration of diverse unmanned capabilities that provide flexible options for Joint Warfighters while exploiting the inherent advantages of unmanned technologies, including persistence, size, speed, maneuverability, and reduced risk to human life. DOD envisions unmanned systems seamlessly operating with manned systems while gradually reducing the degree of human control and decision making required for the unmanned portion of the force structure..."
