Past event: Big Data for Energy Optimization 2021 Summit

"Improving Energy Optimization in Buildings & Utilities through Big Data Capabilities"

The 2021 Summit is designed as an in person socially distanced limited engagement for a maximum of 90 senior leaders and stakeholders.

The Summit serves as an educational forum for cross - sector information exchange and dialogue, and will focus on optimizing energy management through advanced data capabilities for utilities, C&I facilities and buildings, and institutional campuses.

Tying together the groups is a future look to developing a Grid-Interactive Efficient Building Ecosystem

From near term energy management solutions to help improve efficiencies and asset optimization to advanced applications utilizing analytics, ML and AI for greater automation, insights and performance metrics.

Why Should you Attend the Summit:

The utilization of 'big data' to help improve overall energy management has become a greater capability across utilities and the built environment; from increasing visualization of assets and automation of processes, to applying levels of predictive analytics for maintenance and fault detection.

The building sector has the highest potential for improved energy efficiency. Buildings use 36% of America's overall annual energy consumption, and 65% of the electricity demand... “(Source: EPA) and it is estimated that 5%–30% energy use in commercial buildings is wasted due to faults and errors in operations. (Source: LBNL 10.20357/B7V88H).

'Smart' campuses and facilities are the proving grounds for the optimization of data to increase the built envrionment's overall efficiencies by helping to reduce cost and in many cases, generate revenue.

Utilities are turning to big data capabilities to help them improve asset maintenance, integrate DERs, improve demand response, and increase online customer facing applications.

Many energy stakeholders are still in the infancy of applying such capabilities while others have already proven out use cases. This Summit will bridge the gap between those seeking to learn more about what capabilities current exist and how to apply them to their environment, to those with proven case studies that will pass forward their 'lessons learned'.

2021 Summit Key Focus Areas to Include:

Technical Topics for Utilities:
  • Data visualization: bringing together large, disparate data sources across utility assets for real time visualization and management / deploying digital twins
  • Advanced analysis / predictive analytics for customer segmentation, load prediction, price forecasting, and management
  • Data driven asset performance and maintenance needs and capabilities
  • Smart metering and leveraging customer data for improving revenue streams and enhancing customer experience management
  • Robotic Process Automation (RPA) applications: optimizing big data sets for automating high volume, repeatable tasks
  • Use cases for capabilities with greater sophistication, autonomy, intelligence, and assurance
Technical Topics for C&I Facilities and Buildings:
  • Reducing maintenance through advanced condition based monitoring and fault detection
  • Increase energy efficiencies through asset management software including visualization, analytics and automation capabilities
  • Distributed Energy Resources: Integrating battery storage, microgrids, PV, CHP, EV charging and wind into your energy portfolio through onsite generation or various PPA.
  • Integrating IoT sensors on energy assets including HVAC and lighting systems to increase energy optimization
  • Data management: how do you pull in the data, who connects it, who does visualization and analytics.
  • business / leadership discussion on chain of command with the data – see above
  • Energy data management in new and deep retrofit buildings: from meeting demand, utilizing automation for efficiencies, to occupant comforts ( smart thermostats, turning down hvac in unoccupied rooms)
Common Business Strategies and Challenges:
  • Data governance: what does the chain of command look like across an entire data ecosystem of integrated energy assets? Who can see what? Who can manipulate it and where is it stored
  • Common API and code standards, access to data sets
  • Making the business case for IT hardware and software investments to support increased energy efficiencies
  • Where to store your data ?
  • Cybersecurity and data privacy
