POWER ROUNDTABLE SESSIONS

Each of these sessions will take the format of a roundtable with 2-3 short presentations kicking off the session and then participants will split into groups and each table will discuss a different key industry issue in an informal and intimate environment. The session will conclude with each table feeding back their thoughts, actions and outcomes to the group as a whole.

1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Power Roundtable 1: Impact of Leasing on MRO Practices

The growth in the utilization of leased aircraft, engines and components in creating new challenges for all parties involved in the maintenance process. Operators need to understand the impact of lease conditions on maintenance costs and make the correct MRO selection to avoid unexpected expenditure during the delivery and redelivery process. The relationship between the lessor, airline, MRO and regulator needs to be developed to reflect the changed situation and the increasing influence of lessors on the maintenance transaction. Questions still remain over lease return documentation and whether a paperless environment is a realistic aim and how maintenance reserves can be calculated to the benefit of all of those involved in the leasing process. This session will look at all the challenges that leasing brings to the aviation world and what steps can be taken to begin to streamline and standardise the lease transaction and return process.

Key focus areas:

§  Lease return documentation – transitioning to a paperless environment

§  Building effective relationships and understandings – streamlining the contract process

§  Maintenance reserves and redelivery – avoiding unexpected expenses

§  Addressing maintenance portability and flexibility

§  MODERATOR: Tiymor Kalimat, Manager Technical Procurement, Royal Jordanian Airlines and Chairman of the IATA Maintenance Cost Task Force (MCTF)

Power Roundtable 2: The MENA Manpower Challenge

One of the biggest issues facing the MENA region is the serious shortage of manpower in the aviation maintenance sphere. With demand only predicted to increase in the near future, airlines and MROs need to face up to the reality of the absence of quality talent in the region and begin to develop strategies to try and plug the manpower gap. The need to quantify the deficiency in available skilled labour is crucial to moving the industry forward and developing realistic tactics to address the problem. This session will analyse how regional businesses are dealing with this issue and what changes they are making to attract talent into the region. We will also look at how regulatory changes and developments in EASA type ratings are affecting recruitment and retention of engineers and how the regional industry can work with worldwide partners to begin to resolve this critical issue.

Key focus areas:

§  Attracting regional talent – improving recruitment, retention, compensation and career development

§  Impact of training and education  - how can industry and training organizations work together to develop viable career paths

§  Regulatory and certification issues – harmonizing and streamlining the qualification process

§  MODERATORS: Oussama Jadayel, Director, Balamand Institute of Aeronautics, University of Balamand & Lee Ann Tegtmeier, Chief Editor, MRO, Aviation Week

Workshop 1

AIRCRAFT INTERIORS – Cabin Maintenance Practices

Aircraft interiors is big business in the Middle East with modern cabin facilities and state of art entertainment and connectivity systems now a necessity rather than a luxury. With larger emphasis on the passenger experience, how can operators manage and control cabin maintenance and ensure they have the correct parts inventory to fit demand? How can airlines modify and upgrade their cabin interiors without incurring huge costs? What are the best practices for installation, operation and maintenance of advanced IFE and WiFi systems? This session will investigate the main priorities, cost considerations and technology options for today’s aircraft interiors and look at how airlines and MROs can best manage this process to ensure cost efficiency at the same time as a top class service experience.

§  David Conrad, VP Sales, Marketing & Customer Service, Zodiac Aerospace

§  Ashraf Mohamed Mansour, Cabin Interior Engineer, EgyptAir Maintenance and Engineering

§  Cornelis Radjawane, VP Cabin Maintenance Services, GMF AeroAsia

Workshop 2

PROPULSION – Engine Maintenance Challenges in Hot & Harsh Environments

The hot and unpredictable conditions in the Middle East have a huge impact on maintenance and repair practices, with engines particularly vulnerable to the harsh environment. Airlines have to manage the problem of delays and cancellations at short notice due to unforeseen engine maintenance needs caused by sand and dust. In this session we look at the technical and cost implications of operating in this region and look at what preventative maintenance strategies can be implemented to address the challenges set by the external conditions. What best practices in Engine MRO should be followed to minimize the impact of the harsh environment? What effect does location of operation have on ownership costs? How do regional operators handle operating in extreme ambient conditions and how have their altered operating and maintenance procedures?

AIRCRAFT ENGINEERING – Entry Into Service: Operations & Maintenance Experiences

The MENA region is seeing a large amount of fleet growth and many new aircraft types are being introduced into the region at a rapid rate. What are the main challenges associated with entry into service of a new aircraft type and how can you turn these new programs into a working and profitable reality? When going through the EIS process what issues did operators face in terms of infrastructure, equipment and training? New aircraft programs have a raft of unique technologies and e-enabled tools, how have these impacted maintenance practices? How have airlines managed the initial provisioning process for new aircraft types? In this session we look at how to understand the impact of new fleet introductions and hear first-hand experiences from operators and MROs.

Workshop 4

AIRLINE OPERATIONS – Safety Management Systems (SMS)

Operators and MROs need to take a pro-active approach when managing their quality, safety and risk systems to ensure they remain compliant with the numerous aviation regulations and standards worldwide. As this is currently a voluntary rather than mandatory program how can businesses ensure they develop and manage a robust SMS to increase safety oversight? What are the ‘must have’ elements of a SMS and how can you make sure it is continually updated to reflect and comply with regulatory revisions? What advice can regulators offer to industry to enhance levels of safety? This session will focus on best practices when developing SMS and how to ensure buy-in from all the relevant parties involved in the process.

TECHNOLOGY - Mobility Tools – What Do You Need and Where?

Mobile and wireless technologies are moving into MRO in leaps and bounds. However before operations are overhauled to integrate the latest enablers, there must be a comprehensive assessment of realistic impacts, opportunities and challenges that come with these new tools. How will these devices change the existing business process and systems? What are strategies to minimize operational disruptions during implementation stages? What IT solutions and interfaces need to be considered to support these technologies, and what are the associating costs? How do you keep these devices secure? How do you keep up with the constant development and evolution of newer mobility tools?

LOGISTICS & SUPPLY CHAIN – Inventory Optimization

Having a successful inventory strategy is essential to having a streamlined supply chain and reducing overall maintenance costs. To what extent are airlines shifting inventory ownership to their suppliers? How much inventory should airlines own and manage internally, and how does that affect their financial bottom line? What are MRO inventory benchmarks for airlines, MROs, OEMs and distributors? In this session we will look at best practices when managing your inventory, various stocking principles, available technology to assist with inventory optimization and key inventory issues such as pooling, leasing, and other integrated solutions.

PANEL DISCUSSION: The OEM/MRO Relationship – Adapting to a Changed Environment

The balance of power is shifting in the MRO industry with OEMs now having a greater focus on and involvement in the aftermarket. In this session, we gather together some of the key industry players to look at how the MRO market will develop with increasing OEM presence and what this means for their airline customers. Are OEM total service solutions more beneficial to operators in terms of cost? What tactics should MROs employ to sustain their market share? Are partnerships and licensed service centres the way forward in balancing OEM and non-OEM participation in the aftermarket? A discussion of where the market is now, what offerings are available for operators and what future developments are in store.
