Past event: SAMSEC Summit 2014

The South American Security Summit 2014

SAMSEC 14: The South American Security Summit focussed on developing an integrated approach to land and maritime border management in South America. The summit provides a forum to discuss measures to combat Transnational Organized Crime and associated problems of porous borders.

Counter-Narcotic operations are a shared security concern across South America as drug trafficking serves as the predominant means by which Transnational Criminal Organizations obtain money and increase power in the region. The subject, as a unifying security concern lends itself to becoming the foundation for wider defense and security cooperation throughout the region.

This conference is incredibly timely:

  • Brazil is conducting cross border operations and giving military aid to neighbours
  • Canada is maintaining military CN operations in the Americas
  • Uruguay has become the first nation to legalise marijuana
  • EU to give $33.4m to Bolivia and $41M to Peru for CN efforts
  • U.S. is giving $100 million to Peru for CN operations and alternative development
  • Chile has invested US$70 m in the Northern Border plan; a coordinated aerial, terrestrial and maritime surveillance initiative
  • Colombia's government in peace negotiations with the FARC

With senior defence and security leaders meeting with international stakeholders, diplomatic, and law-enforcement personnel the subjects for discussion will include:

  • Best practice in regional cooperation and information exchange
  • Current capabilities, challenges and asset requirements
  • A model for an effective integrated security system
  • System integration challenges
  • Current and planned initiatives funded by foreign nations and international organisations
  • Responding to an adaptive adversary with agility and an integrated approach
  • Future developments in intelligence; data fusion and pattern analysis
