Past event: Naval Shipbuilding and Maintenance 2014 Conference

Putting Lifecycle Management at the Forefront of Naval Platform Acquisition

Naval Shipbuilding and Maintenance Summit Middle East 2014 is proud to be chaired again by Rear (ret) Ahmed Al Sabab Al Teneiji, former Commander of the UAE Navy.

What's new for 2014 and why now?

There is an enormous need within GCC navies to successfully incorporate lifecycle management into the acquisition of new platforms and ensure existing platforms are maintained and serviced with the least amount of down time.

This conference is increasingly important because of the diverse range of missions such platforms are being required to perform and the short response time needed to address asymmetric and unplanned threats and challenges. Regardless of the planned amount of repair and servicing time allocated to a given vessel, priorities change and downtime is often cut.

Regional navies need to address this by securing solutions to maintain and service the key areas and capabilities of all vessels as quickly as possible and even by securing solutions built into a given platform at the design stage.

Naval Shipbuilding and Maintenance taking place in Abu Dhabi on 9 - 10 June 2014 will advance the debate around exactly what new requirements GCC navies should build into new and existing platforms.

Modularity in Ship Acquisition Workshop - 10 June 2014 | 15:00 to 17:00

Modularity makes ships more economical to build. It also makes them more efficient to operate, less expensive to maintain, and less time-consuming to modernise. Whatever the reason, modularity for surface combatants is an imperative; it all fits together.

This workshop will provide an interactive forum for attendees to discuss and debate the ever increasing importance of modularity. Opening with an introduction to modularity, with a focus on its employment in the US Navy, particularly the Littoral Combat Ship, and the workshop will culminate with attendees being set a modularity challenge and asked to offer innovative solutions on how this might be solved.

By attending this workshop, international partners will have the opportunity to come together to address the current challenges and future solutions for modularity in surface combatants

The key themes of the conference include:

  • Building lifecycle management into acquisition of new naval platforms
  • Alternative commissioning and lifecycle considerations and perspectives
  • Minimising downtime of ships whilst in repair
  • Upgrading legacy equipment so it remains relevant
