Assessing Port Infrastructure to Determine

Future Expansion Opportunities and Asset Lifecycle Extension

Based on the global success of our existing ports series, we are proud to launch Port Infrastructure Development into the European market in Rotterdam.

Focusing on every aspect of port development from expansion through to life extension, this event will deliver learning outcomes from the largest and most complex projects around the globe, discussing best practice planning, design, construction, delivery and asset management.

What is Driving the Industry Right Now?

Ports will always need to extend the life of their structures to remain operational; but to take advantage of trade opportunities and remain competitive they are also looking at opportunities to expand.

Major hubs such as Port of Rotterdam are already focusing on expansion through Maasvalkte 2 and Port of Felixstowe through their Felixstowe Expansion Project. Like any project, there are multiple phases which often include projects like channel deepening, only adding to the complexity of the project which can compromise cost and time efficiency.

The alternative to this is utilising land to expand and grow the port through dredging and reclamation, which is what London Gateway have done through their London Gateway Project. Land reclamation is widely seen as a‘greener’ way of expanding port; increasing sustainability and reducing environmental impact however many ports simply do not have this option and have to explore other strategies such as environmental offsetting.

Despite ports investing largely into major projects such as these, cost and time efficiency, suitable extension of life structures and effective stakeholder communication continue to be prominent issues. Combining this with growth in container traffic, ageing infrastructure, coastal corrosion, trends in port automation and alternative shipping fuels like LNG, ports must be aware of how to manage these projects effectively.
