Past event: Maritime Crime Masterclass

In response to fears at seaports and terminals over access to sufficient detection and container scanning solutions to combat the maritime threat, Maritime Crime 2013 will focus upon detection, response and recovery at sea for Naval and Government practitioners.

The masterclass will deal with a multitude of maritime crime threats. In recent years there has been an abundance of information and media coverage of the risk of piracy issues that dominate the news and industry solutions. The masterclass will look into threats that are often overlooked and under rated as key issues.

Smuggling of contraband, people, money, fuel and so on are a key threat to any nation with an ocean border. The challenge of having many small marinas and kilometres of seemingly unsecured cost lines provide criminals a secure and easy way into a country, these issues will be addressed and discuss in during the masterclass to allow delegates to gain insight into the steps needed to mitigate against this threat.

Maritime Crime in industry is ever on the increase. The lack of regulation for the cruising industry and those vessels that fall under the size and draw limits of national bodies has become a recent issue. This will only get worse without the implementation of stringent regulation.

As an island nation, the UK has a variety of critical national infrastructures placed close to the coast. In the event of a terrorist attack, it is essential that we understand the risk and correct response in this coastal environment. Maritime Crime 2013 will bring together expertise from leading maritime specialists and will promote a discussion based masterclass.

Masterclass Leader

Neil J Hall, AFNI, Assistant Commissioner (Retired)

Neil J Hall is a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police and a former Royal Navy Officer who is currently with Sussex Police as the Government Agency Intelligence Network (GAIN) Coordinator. He is a Specialist in Maritime Policing and Security, CBRN Counter Terrorism, Critical Incident Management and Illegal Gangs and Irregular Migration and the effect that has on crime globally. During a career that has spanned thirty eight years, both in Law Enforcement and Naval Service, he was frequently involved in the enforcement of international law, as well as humanitarian and disaster relief operations and he has also taken part in a number of wars and conflicts throughout the world. Internationally recognised as an expert in his field he has served on a number of top level Committees and Practitioners Groups and provided advice to a variety of Government, Non Government and Law Enforcement Agencies both at home and abroad. He regularly speaks on his subjects of expertise at venues worldwide, including the UN and NATO, and is a Visiting Lecturer at Greenwich University and a Guest Lecturer at Portsmouth University.
