Instructors:

Joel Johnson, is Executive Director – International of the Teal Group Corporation. His areas of expertise include aerospace issues involving civil and defense trade, international government and industrial cooperative programs, and export controls. He retired in July of 2005 from the Aerospace Industries Association of America, Inc. (AIA), where he served for 16 years as Vice President, International. AIA is the trade association representing 100 of the major manufacturers of commercial, military and business aircraft, engines, missiles, space craft, and related components and equipment. While at AIA he helped formulate industry positions on such issues as export controls, civil and defense trade, export finance, and international cooperative programs. He frequently enunciated those positions to the press, in testimony before various Congressional committees, and on advisory committees to the Departments of Defense, State, and Commerce.

Suzanne Palmer, President of Export Compliance Solutions, has 15 years of experience within the State Department and as a Licensing Officer, and over 10 years direct experience with the U. S. defense industry. After leaving the State Department she joined Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems in Baltimore and then went on to work at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab.  Combining U.S. Government and defense industry experience, Ms. Palmer specializes in training, interpreting the ITAR and the EAR Export Control Reform initiative and applying U.S. export control regulations.  She has served on the Defense Trade Advisory Group (DTAG) and as a Special Compliance Official (SCO) for a company operating under a Consent Agreement. 

Mal Zerden retired after serving 27 years in State/DDTC.  During his tenure in DDTC, Mr. Zerden either licensed or supervised the licensing of almost every Category covered by the USML. He reviewed the work of licensing analysts and signed off on Commodity Jurisdiction (CJ) requests and Agreements. Mr. Zerden interpreted the regulations for U.S. industry, other U.S. Government agencies and foreign governments. He also interpreted the ITAR for Customs officials (CBP and ICE) and trained officers from those organizations. He provided support to law enforcement organizations and testified at trials that involved violations of the Arms Export Control Act (AECA).

Jennifer Saak, Ph.D Jennifer has 17 years of experience in export controls compliance and scientific research at Fortune 500 companies. Her expertise is in the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and economic sanctions (OFAC) with a focus on commodity and technology classification, deemed exports, and technology control plans. Jennifer was also the Technology Trade Compliance Leader for SABIC, a $50 billion multi-national petrochemical company based in Saudi Arabia. In that role, she created and led a team responsible for developing export compliance processes for sites located in 10 different countries.
