Solar Energy Events and Conferences

Solar radiation, along with secondary solar-powered resources such as wind and wave power, hydroelectricity and biomass, account for most of the available renewable energy on earth. Only a minuscule fraction of the available solar energy is used.

Solar energy is, simply put, energy that is collected from sunlight. This energy is used for generating electricity by photosynthesis (photovoltaic or PV-cells) or for generating heat by solar thermal collectors.

One of the most promising solar techniques is Concentrated Solar Power, and specifically Solar Power Towers. A solar power tower consists of an array of dual-axis tracking reflectors (heliostats) that concentrate light on a central receiver atop a tower; the receiver contains a fluid deposit, which can consist of sea water. The working fluid in the receiver is heated to 5001000 C (9321832 F) and then used as a heat source for a power generation or energy storage system. The possibility to store energy with a high efficiency rate and resulting cost effectiveness make this technology very promising.

In 2009 the cost of building a CSP station was typically about US$2.50 to $4 per watt, which works out to 12 to 18 Euro cents per kilowatt-hour. Recent studies expect a further price drop in the comings years to 14 to 10 cent/kWh. Some specialized investment companies even expect it to go down to $0.06(US)/kWh by 2015.
