Past event: Submarine Operations and Requirements 2014 Conference

Delivering Affordable Technology for Maritime Deterrence

Submarines are amongst the most costly, complex and demanding of the Navy’s platforms, yet one of the most essential in protecting our territorial waters. International austerity has resulted in a significant slowdown in technological advancement; however with the increasingly sophisticated and rising presence of underwater threats, addressing such a slowdown can no longer be neglected.

Submarine Operations and Requirements 2014 will explore such complexities and demands that the submarine places on our navies in order to identify solutions to sustain and surpass current capability. This will include cost – effective repair and maintenance solutions as well as influencing future competencies, such as integrating communication, enhancing the capability of AUV’s and attracting personnel to pave the way for the next generation of submariners.

Central themes to be addressed at Submarine Operations and Requirements 2014 include:

  • How is the role of the submariner changing, with discussion of recent operational feedback and desired capability development
  • Maintenance and repair to extend the life of existing submarine platforms and expand it’s operational availability and adaptability to new technology
  • Tackling the communication issues prohibiting effective interoperability
  • Acknowledging the need to retain and attract the next generation of submariners in order to ensure there is an effective future for underwater operations

Submarine Operations and Requirements will provide an unparalleled insight into the future naval requirements to prepare for future littoral environments, the latest in the advancing spectrum of automated underwater vehicles (AUV’s), communication and sensor technology coupled with effective solutions to repair, maintenance and personnel retention issues that continue to thwart the future operational competency of the submarine.
