Past event: Electronic Warfare Europe

Unifying Electromagnetic Warfare in a Complex World - Together

Over the past few years mature, offensive EW activity in Europe has demonstrated that in the electromagnetic domain, warfare is no longer theoretical. The AOC's 24th European event, will consider the future of EW and EM Operations in the changing light of current and emerging threats including Hybrid Warfare, Information Operations/Warfare, the multi-domain battle (MDB), Cyber and Anti Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) where some potential opponents are excelling.

About EW Europe

We live in a time of increasing uncertainty on many fronts.  Threats, challenges and opportunities are increasing.  Technology is accelerating.  The world is undoubtedly changing and in unforeseen ways.  In terms of future warfare, national forces are being re-shaped and re-equipped to face an operational maneuver space that will be complex and connected, but constrained. Over the past few years, mature, offensive EW activity in Europe has demonstrated that in the electromagnetic domain, warfare is no longer theoretical and nations and alliances hoping to maintain their security in this increasingly contested environment must adapt and advance their technologies and doctrines to confront the rapidly evolving nature of the EM landscape. It may well be chaotic unless the right, informed choices are made now.  Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Arabian Peninsula and the Asia-Pacific are all among the most vital areas in the world and the focus of much change, uncertainty and opportunity.  In terms of EW and electromagnetic operations, how can we make sense of all of these things, minimise the risks and maximise the benefits?

2019 Theme

The electromagnetic environment is changing at an increasing pace and the scope and depth of electromagnetic manoeuvre warfare is consequently changing in parallel.  The importance of electronic warfare (EW) system adaptability, flexibility, and innovation has also increased.  Not only are innovative technologies greatly needed, but the Industry and EW Community itself needs to change organizationally to embrace innovative ideas, technologies, and tactics - and at a significantly faster pace.  Innovation is about more than refreshing technology, it is also about evolving culture.  Perhaps more important is that free-world allies - in countries, militaries, academia and industry - must embrace the concept of working together to recognize and  embrace changing technologies, risks, threat and opportunities.  There has been considerable progress over many years exemplified by shared platform development, particularly in aircraft development, and by successful alliances like NATO and European alliances with countries like Sweden and Finland, and others around the globe such as ABCA and FPDA.  Now though, much more is needed.  Warfare capabilities including EW, SIGINT, Navigation and NAVWAR, Communication, C4ISR are all areas where working together in a unified way is critically important, and yet these are areas where so often information and actions are stove-piped.  EW Stockholm will examine technological and conceptual means of ensuring success for free-world nations everywhere across the spectrum of operational activity.
