Overview of the Masterclass

This masterclass will provide an in-depth analysis into the vital and increasing role of social media intelligence (SOCMINT) as a component of open source intelligence (OSINT) in crisis management operations, focusing on the situation in the Middle East and the events currently unfolding there.

Key subjects that will be addressed are; how UN crisis management operations develop understanding (i.e. the perception and interpretation of a particular situation to provide the context, insight and foresight for effective decision making); the increasing role of SOCMINT as a component of OSINT; the importance of OSINT and SOCMINT for mandate implementation (i.e. threats and opportunities) in an operations environment like the Middle East.

Speakers

Reynaud Theunens, Chief, HQ UNIFIL

Reynaud Theunens is since 2009 Chief of the Joint Mission Analysis Centre (JMAC) in the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL) in Lebanon. A graduate from the Royal Military Academy, Brussels, he first served in the Belgian Armed Forces in Germany and subsequently at the Ministry of Defence, General Intelligence and Security Service. He participated in the UNPROFOR/UNPF and SFOR missions in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina between 1994 and 1999. From 2001 to 2009, he worked at the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) at the ICTY, and testified in ten trials as a military expert witness. He regularly gives lectures on intelligence/understanding in peace support operations.
